New Statistics Detailing New Investment in the U.S. by Foreign Direct Investors Are Now Available11/30/2015
Via U.S. Department of Commerce Bureau of Economic Analysis:
Statistics detailing the amount and type of new investment made in the United States by foreign direct investors to acquire, establish, or expand U.S. businesses are now available from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The statistics cover new investments initiated in 2014 and offer details on these investments, including the countries from which the new investment originates, the U.S. industries that are drawing new investments, and U.S. states where new investments are located. BEA previously collected and published similar information on acquisitions and establishments but discontinued the series with survey year 2008 because of budget constraints. The reinstated statistics now include expansions of existing U.S. businesses in an effort to more fully capture “greenfield” investments. Greenfield investment includes establishments of new companies by foreign investors and expansions of existing companies. Here are some highlights from the statistics:
For more information, see the November 30th press release and data tables. Statistics for 2015 and revised statistics for 2014 will be released in the summer of 2016. International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of their efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. First Lady Michelle Obama on International Education Week: ![]() World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) Executive Vice President Ms. Bella Heule recently accepted the role of Chief Marketing Officer, Senior Vice President with the Port of San Diego. "It has been such an honor and privilege for me to serve our Association during the past 16 years starting as EVP of the WTCA Los Angeles-Long Beach, then as CEO of WTC San Diego, and finally as EVP of WTCA headquarters. The insights gained during these roles, coupled with that of a Director, enabled me to serve the organization during a time of transition. Today, the WTCA is stronger with a vibrant, knowledgeable team, enhanced programs, and increased member interaction," said Ms. Heule. Ms. Heule has served as WTCA's Executive Vice President since June 2012.
Although Bella’s direct role with WTCA has come to an end as of November 18th, her ties to the WTCA will not be completely severed. The Port of San Diego is a license holder for the World Trade Center San Diego, and we expect to remain connected with Ms. Heule and the Port of San Diego through the WTCA network.
We extend our sincere and heartfelt appreciation for her 16 years of contributions to the Association, and wish her best on her new endeavor. The Global Philadelphia Association and the City of Philadelphia joined together with the goal of making Philadelphia an official member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities. Their effort was successful: Philadelphia is the first and only World Heritage City in the United States. The World Heritage City designation on November 6, 2015 comes as the result of a two-year campaign spearheaded by the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) and is expected to enhance the City's international stature and provide a new growth engine to drive tourism and commerce in the region. Founded in 2010, the Global Philadelphia Association boasts over 150 members and a board of directors comprised of more than 30 of Philadelphia's most internationally-minded representatives and organizations, including World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia President Linda Mysliwy Conlin. GPA's mission is to assist--and encourage greater interaction among--the many organizations and people who are engaged in international activity within the Greater Philadelphia region; promote the development of an international consciousness within the region; and enhance the region's global profile. Philadelphia, the fifth-largest U.S. city, now joins a network of over 266 other World Heritage Cities in the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC). Highlighting the OWHC fraternity and global connection, a recent article by Observer states World Heritage Cities have a combined population of over 130 million, with Italy and Spain leading in city representation, 20 each; followed by France, Mexico and Germany, each with 11.
After being granted the status of an Observer Member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities in 2013, the City of Philadelphia now stands as a full member of OWHC, and the first and only World Heritage City in the United States. The new OWHC status was formally revealed on Friday, the 6th of November, through a vote taken by the XIII World Congress of the Organization of World Heritage Cities in Arequipa, Peru. "Today marks the start of a new and exciting chapter in the history of Philadelphia, which is proud to become the first World Heritage City in the United States," said Mayor Nutter. "As a World Heritage City, Philadelphia is being officially recognized on the global stage for its wealth of contributions to the world as the epicenter of American democracy and for its enduring commitment to preserving the unique historical and cultural assets in our diverse community. As we celebrate this milestone, the next step is to focus on the future and how we can optimize this World Heritage City recognition to attract more people to visit, invest, work, study and live in Philadelphia."
Now that the designation has been secured, the Global Philadelphia Association Initiative will focus on 3 overarching goals: 1) Promote preservation and appreciation of Philadelphia's geographical, historical and cultural heritage through WHC designation and continued education. 2) Provide a powerful economic and cultural stimulus to the region. 3) Inspire citizens to feel pride in their World Heritage City.
World Trade Center of Greater Philadelphia looks forward to continued partnership with GPA in building upon the WHC distinction and OWHC membership to forge the next era of culture, commerce, and global community.
From Citizen Diplomacy International:
It is with regret that the Board of Directors of Citizen Diplomacy International of Philadelphia (CDI) accepts the resignation of its long-time President & CEO, Nancy Gilboy, who is stepping down due to issues with vertigo and progressive hearing loss from Meniere’s. Her resignation is effective December 31, 2015. However, she will remain involved as President Emeritus. Gilboy is the seventh person in 62 years to lead the region’s official international relations organization since its founding in 1954 as a public/private partnership with the U.S. Department of State and the City of Philadelphia. Gilboy has headed CDI (formerly IVC, International Visitors Council of Philadelphia) since 1990, during an historic twenty-five year period of U.S. involvement around the world. As the local host for the country’s premier exchange, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), she and CDI’s staff engage thousands of volunteers, connecting them to important and unfolding world events. As citizen diplomats these volunteers played, and continue to play, a vital role in the country’s efforts to make friends and change how the U.S. is viewed around the world. Full Announcement |
